Inaugurating Program of ART OnO, ‘Artist Talk: Jiwon Choi’ examines the oeuvre of artist Jiwon Choi through a talk with the artist. The artist was awarded the 2022 Public Art New Hero and held exhibitions at spaces, including the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, PARK SEOBO FOUNDATION, and ThisWeekendRoom.

Choi became known for her artworks featuring ceramic dolls with shiny but fragile surfaces by reminding individuals of the contemporary era. In recent works, the artist expands the subject matter similar to the dolls’ nature, including stuffed animals and insects, to build more dense narratives.

The conversation with the artist is an opportunity to examine Jiwon Choi’s art world in depth while focusing on the artist’s achievements in painting.

‘최지원 아티스트 토크’는 최지원(b.1996)과의 대화를 통해 그의 작품 세계를 조명하는 자리다. 작가는 매끄러운 표면의 도자 인형이 등장하는 작품으로 이름을 알렸다. 2022 퍼블릭아트 뉴히어로로 선정되었으며 디스위켄드룸 등에서 전시를 열며 주목을 모으고 있다.

그의 작품 세계는 초기에 빛나는 표면을 지녔지만 쉽게 깨지는 도자 인형을 통해 동시대인의 모습을 떠올리게 했다. 최근의 작업은 마찬가지로 삶의 아름다움과 연약함을 함께 지닌 박제 동물 등을 포함해 더 내밀한 이야기를 보여주는 중이다.

이번 강연에서는 이 모든 것을 가능하게 하는 작가의 회화적 성취를 중심으로 대화를 전개한다. 최지원 작품의 면면을 심도 있게 살펴볼 기회다.
